MRCP Part 2
The MRCP 2 section is split in to two sections, a written examination and a clinical examination.
The written examination can be taken by those who have successfully passed the MRCP 1 examination, and aims to test the examinee’s knowledge of clinical understanding to a higher level, it also incorporates the examinee’s ability to apply their knowledge of clinical science to solve problems and make clinical judgements. Examinees must be readily able to:
- Prioritise diagnostic or problem lists
- Plan investigations
- Select a plan for immediate management
- Select a plan for long term management
- Assess prognosis

The Part 2 Clinical Examination, otherwise known as PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills), aims to test trainee physicians in real-life situations. It caters for those who want to enter a speciality within medicine, and its notoriously rigorous in order to insure that the trainees are competent across a range of specialities and can provide the best care possible.
PACES tests the trainee’s competence in 7 main areas; Physical Examination, Identifying physical signs, clinical communication, differential diagnosis, clinical judgement, managing patient’s concerns and maintaining patient welfare.
