MRCP Part 1

The MRCP (the Examination for the Diploma of Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom) is designed for trainee physicians to demonstrate that they have the understanding and a broad knowledge of common medical conditions and clinical sciences. The MRCP serves as an entry qualification for specialty training and is part of the compulsory assessment for core medical training. This standardized membership qualification has been provided through the collaboration of the three Royal Colleges of Physicians, based in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

What are the different components of the MRCP qualification? The MRCP has been split in to Part 1 and Part 2, yet has three separately assessed components:

Part 1 – Examination

The purpose of the part 1 examination is to find the trainee physicians who possess the broad knowledge and understanding of medical conditions and clinical sciences. It aims to test the knowledge of certain medical conditions and their ability to apply this knowledge to make judgements.

Part 2 – Written Examination

Having passed part 1, trainee physicians will then undergo the Part 2 written examination, whereby they will have to demonstrate their ability to apply their medical knowledge to clinical problem solving.

Part 2 – Clinical Examination

Part 2 clinical examination aims to assess trainee physicians through real life situations, having to put their knowledge and understanding to make diagnoses and problem solving.

The MRCP 1 exam can be completed online, and we have numerous learning resources on the 123Doc website. Interactive videos and mock questions are provided, to prepare fully before taking the examination.
